Our verdict

MOTS-c is preclinical, yet its biology is modern, mechanistically characterized, and taken seriously by mitochondrial researchers; the gap is simply that no randomized human trial exists. Epitalon's problem is different and harder to excuse: the telomerase, melatonin-rhythm, and human mortality claims trace almost entirely to a single St. Petersburg group, cluster around 2001 to 2011, and have not been independently replicated. Neither is FDA-approved and both circulate as research-use-only material of unverified identity, purity, and dose, so neither is a consumer product. Judged on evidence quality rather than claim size, MOTS-c is the more defensible science and epitalon the more oversold pitch.

Epitalon fits if

Epitalon is worth reading mainly as a case study in how a confident anti-aging narrative gets built on old, small, single-source studies.

MOTS-c fits if

MOTS-c is the better fit for a reader who wants genuine mitochondrial biology and can live with the fact that every human claim is still extrapolation from animals.
