Resveratrol is the molecule behind the “French paradox” and a decade of longevity headlines — the compound that switched on sirtuins in a petri dish and let mice on a bad diet live longer. If you are shopping for a supplement, the honest truth is narrower than the marketing: the human evidence is mixed-to-modest, the grand anti-aging claims are unproven, and resveratrol has a genuine chemistry problem — you absorb plenty of it, but almost none reaches your blood intact. First, the honest evidence frame

Resveratrol is a polyphenol from grapes, red wine and Japanese knotweed that activates sirtuin (SIRT1) signaling — the pathway that inspired the whole category.[10] In humans, a 30-day study in obese adults reported calorie-restriction-like shifts in energy metabolism,[6] and meta-analyses of randomized trials find small improvements in some glycemic and cardiometabolic markers, with meaningful inconsistency across studies.[8][9] But the counter-evidence is real too: a well-run high-dose trial in obese men found essentially no metabolic benefit.[7]That is the honest ceiling — possibly useful, modest, unreliable metabolic support in people, and no proven longevity effect. The problem that shapes every buying decision: bioavailability

Here is the fact the marketing skips. When researchers gave people a large oral dose of resveratrol, most of it was absorbed across the gut — but it was metabolized so rapidly (into sulfates and glucuronides) that only trace amounts of the intact molecule reached the bloodstream.[1] A phase-I dose-escalation study confirmed the same pattern: even multi-gram doses produce low peak levels of unchanged resveratrol.[2] This is why a “5,000 mg” label number can be almost meaningless, and why absorption strategy — form, particle size, co-ingredients — matters as much as the milligram count. Every criterion below flows from this one problem.

Criterion 1 — Isomer: it must say “trans-resveratrol”

Resveratrol exists as two isomers, and they are not interchangeable. Trans-resveratrol is the biologically active form used in essentially all the human research; cis-resveratrol is not. The compound is also sensitive to light, heat and oxidation, which can convert trans to cis and degrade potency. So the label should specify trans-resveratrol (ideally with a purity percentage), and the product should be in opaque packaging. A bottle that just says “resveratrol” with no isomer and no purity figure is a bottle that is hiding something.[3]

Criterion 2 — Dose: match what the trials used

The human trials that showed anything clustered in a modest range: roughly 150–500 mg/day, with some studies going up to about 1 g/day.[6][3] The 30-day metabolic study used 150 mg/day of a trans-resveratrol product;[6] higher-dose trials exist but did not reliably do better, and larger doses raise the odds of gastrointestinal upset.[7] Chasing a megadose is not supported by the evidence — more is not clearly better here, and the bioavailability ceiling means much of it is metabolized regardless.[1] Pick a product that lets you land in the studied range with a stated, verifiable milligram amount.

Criterion 3 — Absorption enhancers (with an honest caveat)

Because bioavailability is the bottleneck, some products add strategies to improve it. Two have a plausible rationale: micronization (reducing particle size), which a micronized formulation study used to improve delivery,[5] and piperine (black-pepper extract), which slowed resveratrol's metabolism and raised blood levels in an early human study.[4]The honest caveat: this evidence is limited and preliminary, mostly small studies and surrogate markers, not proof of better outcomes. Criterion 4 — Third-party testing and a Certificate of Analysis

Resveratrol is a botanical extract, and independent lab verification is the single most useful trust signal. Look for an outside-lab Certificate of Analysis (COA) that confirms identity, the actual trans-resveratrol content (not just total “resveratrol”), the trans-to-cis ratio if disclosed, and screening for heavy metals and solvent residues. Criterion 5 — Source and purity: knotweed or synthetic

Most commercial resveratrol comes from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), a rich natural source, or is produced synthetically. Neither is inherently “better” — a clean, high-purity synthetic trans-resveratrol can be more consistent than a poorly refined botanical extract, and vice versa. What matters is stated purity, minimal fillers and dyes, and a COA to back it up. Be skeptical of “whole-plant” or “complex” blends that bury the trans-resveratrol dose so you cannot tell how much you are actually getting.
