Glutathione has the more direct human evidence: a six-month RCT shows oral supplementation genuinely raises the body's own glutathione stores, though levels drift back after stopping and no trial shows a disease or aging outcome. Ergothioneine's case is entirely observational — blood levels track with healthier aging in cohort studies — but no completed trial has tested whether supplementing it changes anything. Neither has been compared directly.

Ergothioneine fits if

You're drawn to the epidemiological signal and want the compound with a dedicated cellular transporter concentrating it in mitochondria-rich tissue.

Glutathione fits if

You want the compound with actual interventional human data, even though it only measures a biomarker — and consider the cheaper glycine+NAC precursor route first.
