Our verdict
In DURATION-6, once-daily liraglutide 1.8 mg beat once-weekly exenatide on both HbA1c (a reduction of about 1.48% versus 1.28%) and weight (roughly 3.6 kg versus 2.7 kg). The outcomes data point the same way: liraglutide cut major adverse cardiovascular events by about 13% in LEADER, while exenatide was safe in EXSCEL but showed no statistically significant reduction. Both are approved for type 2 diabetes; only liraglutide is also approved for chronic weight management. Exenatide's significance today is mostly historical.
