Bovine colostrum vs Lactoferrin

Not really two products: one is a fraction of the other, sold separately at a declared dose — and the whole-food version almost never says how much of it you are getting.

By Julian RothResearch & dataUpdated October 2026

Short answer

Bovine colostrum and lactoferrin are both over-the-counter supplements with human trial data, so the choice comes down to your goal. Bovine colostrum suits someone focused on gut health, immune support, recovery and skin and hair, while lactoferrin is aimed at iron deficiency and anemia support, immune support and gut health.

Bovine colostrum

First milk, colostrum powder, IgG concentrate

Clinical data

Two narrow but real signals — blunting stress-induced intestinal permeability and cutting upper-respiratory symptom days in hard-training athletes — under a mountain of untested marketing, at consumer doses far below the trials.

Lactoferrin

Bovine lactoferrin, bLf, lactotransferrin

Clinical data

Real iron-binding biology and a genuine tolerability edge over ferrous sulfate — but every time the trial got bigger the effect got smaller, and ELFIN was null.

marks a row where the two differ. “Not established” marks a cell the available evidence does not answer. Evidence grades come from our evidence matrix, which grades each molecule on the human data for the use it is marketed for.

Our verdict

Colostrum is the source material lactoferrin is isolated from, so the real choice is a measured dose against an unstated one. Lactoferrin's best case is iron: pooled trials favored it over ferrous salts for hemoglobin, but a 2026 double-blind trial in 555 women found 200 and 400 mg/day were not merely no better than ferrous sulfate but clearly worse, and ELFIN randomized 2,203 infants and found nothing where a dozen small trials had suggested an 18% sepsis reduction. Its one durable finding is better GI tolerability. Colostrum's own signals are narrower still — blunting provoked intestinal permeability and cutting upper-respiratory symptom days in hard-training athletes — and its trials used 20 to 60 grams a day where stick packs deliver one to three.

Bovine colostrum fits if

You want the whole-fraction product for the gut-permeability or athlete-immunity signal, and you have checked the dose against the 20-60 g the trials used.

Lactoferrin fits if

You want a known quantity of the actual molecule — most relevant if iron tolerability is the problem, since that is the finding that survived every trial getting bigger.

Bovine colostrum vs Lactoferrin: common questions

Is either bovine colostrum or lactoferrin FDA-approved?
No. Bovine colostrum is sold as a dietary supplement; no FDA approval for any indication. Lactoferrin is sold as an unapproved dietary supplement; no FDA approval for any indication.
Which has stronger human evidence, bovine colostrum or lactoferrin?
Neither clearly. Both have human clinical data. The key source for bovine colostrum is Permeability meta-analysis, Dig Dis Sci 2024; for lactoferrin, it is ELFIN trial, Lancet 2019.
What are the main safety concerns with bovine colostrum and lactoferrin?
Bovine colostrum must be avoided by anyone with cow's-milk protein allergy; not lactose-free. Lactoferrin is well tolerated; cow's-milk protein allergy is a hard contraindication.

The full evidence reviews

  • Bovine colostrum: what it is, and what it has actually been tested for

First-milking colostrum is a mixture, not a molecule — about half the IgG survives to the small intestine, which is why the real evidence sits at the gut barrier in stressed athletes and nowhere near the skin, hair and leaky-gut claims selling it.

  • Lactoferrin: what the evidence actually shows

An iron-binding milk protein with real biology and a consistent pattern in its trials — the smaller the study, the better it looks. ELFIN and a 2026 head-to-head against ferrous sulfate are the ones that count.
