Cordyceps vs Lion's Mane
Two mushrooms aimed at two different jobs, aerobic capacity versus cognition. Both rest on small, short human trials and mechanisms that still live mostly in the lab.
Cordyceps
Small trials show modest aerobic gains in older or untrained people but nothing in trained athletes; the cordycepin mechanism is mostly preclinical.

Hericium erinaceus
A real NGF-stimulating mechanism (mostly preclinical) plus small, short human trials hinting at cognitive and mood benefit — promising, but far from the 'regrows your brain' marketing.

Our verdict
There is no winner here, because they target different outcomes and both have thin human evidence. Cordyceps produced a small improvement in metabolic and ventilatory thresholds in healthy older adults in one placebo-controlled trial, while a trial of the same Cs-4 extract in trained cyclists found no endurance benefit at all, and the cordycepin mechanism is largely preclinical. Lion's mane has a small double-blind trial in older adults with mild cognitive impairment where scores improved while supplementing and faded after stopping, plus a handful of pilot-sized mood and cognition studies; its NGF and neurite mechanism is almost entirely in cells and animals. Both are well tolerated, and for both the product form matters enormously, from fermented Cs-4 versus cultivated C. militaris to fruiting body versus grain-grown mycelium.
Cordyceps fits if
An older or deconditioned person starting an aerobic program who will take a standardized extract consistently for several weeks and expects a small edge rather than a jolt.
Lion's Mane fits if
Someone curious about a cognition or mood effect who will use a fruiting-body extract standardized to beta-glucans for 8 to 16 weeks and judge the result honestly.
