Lion's Mane vs Rhodiola Rosea
Both are sold for the brain, but for different failure modes: adding cognitive function versus keeping it from sagging when you are stressed, run down and short on sleep.
Lion's Mane
Hericium erinaceus
A real NGF-stimulating mechanism (mostly preclinical) plus small, short human trials hinting at cognitive and mood benefit — promising, but far from the 'regrows your brain' marketing.

Several placebo-controlled RCTs show a short-term benefit for stress-related fatigue and mental performance — but trials are small/lower-quality and systematic reviews call it promising, not proven.

Our verdict
Rhodiola has the more focused and more repeated human signal, with randomized trials of the standardized SHR-5 extract reporting reduced stress-related fatigue and better mental performance in night-shift physicians and exam-stressed students; two systematic reviews still call that evidence promising rather than proven, because the trials are small, short and heterogeneous. Lion's mane rests on a thinner set, the best of which improved cognitive scores in older adults with mild cognitive impairment only while they kept taking it, with the remaining studies pilot-sized or uncontrolled. Neither is a treatment for cognitive decline or for a mood disorder, and they have not been compared directly. With both, the specific standardized extract matters far more than the word on the label.
Lion's Mane fits if
Someone running a longer-horizon cognition experiment who will use a fruiting-body extract at a studied dose and keep expectations modest.
Rhodiola Rosea fits if
Someone whose real complaint is stress-driven fatigue and fading focus under load, who can get an extract standardized to roughly 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside.
