Our verdict
These are not interchangeable, and the senolytic case is clearly weaker for luteolin. Fisetin was the most potent senolytic of the ten flavonoids screened in the landmark study and extended both median and maximum lifespan in old mice, with an independent 2025 study finding reduced frailty and improved grip strength in aged but not young animals — while luteolin, a flavone rather than a flavonol, showed only weak activity in that same screen. Neither has a published human senolytic result: fisetin's trials are still ongoing with no outcomes reported, and luteolin has nothing in humans on that claim at all. Luteolin's genuine strength is elsewhere and it is mechanistic — in cultured human mast cells it out-performed cromolyn, the only licensed mast-cell blocker, on every mediator tested — but almost its entire human record is combination products, and the one published placebo-controlled test of luteolin on its own, a crossover in 21 Gulf War Illness veterans, was negative at both doses.

Fisetin is the one to follow if the senolytic hypothesis is what interests you, on the clear understanding that every efficacy claim behind it is currently mouse data with the human trials still running.

Luteolin is the one to read if your interest is mast cells, allergy or the microglial brain-fog story, treating the mechanism as a reason to watch the two completed trials of luteolin alone that have never reported results.
