Our verdict
MD Live offers weight management through eligible health-plan benefits, with branded prescriptions available only during Primary Care Routine Care visits. Anti-obesity prescribing excludes Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey. Visit copays and medication costs depend on the plan. Its value is continuity and coverage support; a general urgent-care benefit does not establish access.
Main trade-offs
- Virtual Primary Care benefit required
- No anti-obesity prescribing in four named states

Our review in detail
Full assessment
MD Live is worth considering first when your health plan includes its Virtual Primary Care benefit. It can connect weight management with other routine health needs, allow follow-up with the same doctor and help evaluate prescription coverage. Access is the decisive limitation: having an MD Live urgent-care account does not establish eligibility for weight treatment. Anti-obesity prescriptions require a Primary Care Routine Care appointment and are unavailable through this pathway in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey. For an eligible member, the service may avoid paying for a separate retail care membership. That does not make medication free, and a clinician can decline a requested prescription. This assessment concerns the published care pathway and payment rules; it does not report personal treatment experience or independently measured patient outcomes.
What it is
The relevant service sits within MD Live Virtual Primary Care, rather than a public subscription that anyone can buy at a fixed GLP-1 price. Its primary-care page describes preventive screening, routine appointments and ongoing management of conditions including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Those services have different purposes. A wellness screening can identify an issue that deserves attention, but it is not the appointment type at which an anti-obesity drug can be prescribed. Someone whose employer advertises MD Live should therefore ask specifically whether Virtual Primary Care is included, rather than assume every benefit uses the same menu. The service also describes a separate pharmacy-benefit weight-management arrangement with Express Scripts. That arrangement has its own eligibility and visit allowance; its promises should not be applied to every MD Live member.
How care works
A weight-management visit starts with the doctor reviewing health history, goals and relevant clinical information. The published program includes individualized nutrition and activity goals, laboratory testing when appropriate, follow-up appointments and possible digital coaching. MD Live describes coordination with an existing local doctor and sharing visit summaries on request. This matters for someone who already has a primary-care relationship: the virtual clinician needs an accurate account of medicines and other treatment, while the local clinician needs to know what changes. Coaching tools can help organize meals, activity and weight tracking, but access to those tools depends on the care plan. They do not replace the prescribing appointment. Appointment availability also deserves a realistic reading. Evening and weekend scheduling and possible same-day visits are useful conveniences, while the provider explicitly makes availability subject to its schedule. Ask when the next routine follow-up can be booked and which contact route handles medication questions between appointments.
Costs, billing and cancellation
There is no universal care-plus-medication monthly price for this pathway. The displayed primary-care copay can be as low as zero for participating plans, with the actual amount shown before scheduling. Prescription expenses depend separately on the pharmacy benefit, proposed drug and coverage decision. A covered visit therefore tells you little about the cost of the first fill or a later refill. Ask the plan for the drug copay, deductible treatment, authorization requirements and any continuing eligibility conditions. MD Live says its doctors can check covered options and assist with pre-approvals, which is useful support rather than a guarantee of coverage. Its general cancellation FAQ lists a $25 charge for a Routine Care appointment canceled within two hours; wellness visits use a 24-hour window. Medicaid and Medicare members are exempt from that cancellation fee, and emergency or technical circumstances may qualify for a waiver. Read the policy displayed for the actual booking. This is an appointment-based benefit, so a retail subscription cancellation promise is not the appropriate comparison.
Medication and evidence
The weight-management material identifies FDA-approved options such as Wegovy and Zepbound and says compounded or unapproved drugs are not used. The doctor chooses treatment according to medical need and plan coverage, and can consider other approved weight-management medicines. A brand name appearing on the website is not an assurance that a particular insurer will pay for it or that a particular patient should receive it. Approval attaches to a specific product and indication; it is not a blanket assurance that a medicine suits everyone. The practical advantage is a clear branded-treatment pathway with a preferred pharmacy, including eligible mail-order fulfillment. The practical limitation is that the prescribing decision, benefit approval and pharmacy fill remain separate steps. Confirm who follows an authorization denial, where the prescription will be sent and when the next clinical review is needed before the current supply runs out.
