JumpstartMD review
Coach-heavy California program
A California medical weight loss program with 14 clinics and online visits, built on frequent coaching, Quest labs and InBody scans. Membership pricing is by phone; medication is extra.
Our verdict
JumpstartMD is the opposite of a quick online prescription. It's a California program, started by physicians in 2007, that expects you to meet with a clinician or health coach often, ideally weekly at the start, and it surrounds the medication with lab panels, body-composition scans and a low-carb, whole-food eating plan. You can do that at one of its 14 clinics or online anywhere in the state. Clinicians prescribe brand-name GLP-1s, help with prior authorizations, and can fill compounded prescriptions through a named partner pharmacy. The catch is price transparency: membership fees depend on how often you meet and are quoted by phone or inside the intake, a limited-time start fee is advertised separately, and medication is always billed on top. It serves California residents only.

JumpstartMD, Inc. is a Burlingame, California company founded in 2007 by Stanford-trained physicians, including Sean Bourke, MD. It runs 14 clinics in Burlingame, Campbell, Irvine, Marin, Monterey Bay, Mountain View, Piedmont, Pleasanton, Redwood City, San Francisco (two), San Jose, Santa Cruz and Walnut Creek, and offers the same program by video across California. Besides weight loss it offers hormone therapy for menopause and low testosterone, vitamin therapy, sermorelin and supplements. It says members have lost more than 1.5 million pounds, and it treats adults as well as teens 16 and older with parental consent on a case-by-case basis. Membership isn't billed to insurance, but a concierge claims team will file for out-of-network reimbursement if you have a PPO, attend at least two weekly visits a month and are paid up; HMO and Medicare plans don't cover it. The site displays a LegitScript seal.
How it works
You can start with a free consultation by phone or by request online, where a team member explains the program, the medications and the membership levels. Labs come next at a Quest location, and the company says its panel screens 60 biomarkers. Your first clinician visit reviews those results and sets your plan, which may include medication or not. From then on you meet regularly, in person or online, with a clinician or a coach trained in nutrition, medicine, psychology or fitness; your clinician manages dosing, watches for interactions and builds a step-down plan for maintenance. InBody scans at the clinics track fat and lean mass so the team can try to protect muscle. Between visits, an app with an AI assistant answers questions. The eating plan emphasizes protein, healthy fats and whole foods; JumpstartMD doesn't sell prepackaged meals.
Pricing transparency
JumpstartMD doesn't post membership prices. Its FAQ says pricing is based on how often you meet and your goals, and points you to a phone call; the first screen of its online intake says plans start "from $99/month". A banner advertises a limited-time start fee of $99, marked down from $379. Medication is never included in the membership: you can fill brand-name prescriptions at your own pharmacy with your insurance, use the manufacturers' self-pay programs, or have compounded medication shipped by its partner pharmacy, in which case JumpstartMD bills you for the prescription. The company puts the full retail price of Zepbound at around $1,300 a month and says savings programs or coverage can bring it down to $25. Payment is due at each visit, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted. The site publishes no cancellation or refund terms for membership, so ask about both before you sign up.
Branded vs compounded
Brand-name Wegovy, Ozempic, oral Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro, plus older GLP-1s such as Saxenda, Victoza, Trulicity and Byetta, and non-GLP-1 options including metformin, bupropion, naltrexone, topiramate and phentermine-type appetite suppressants; you can also follow the program without medication. Wegovy, oral Wegovy, Zepbound and Saxenda are FDA-approved for weight management, while Ozempic, Mounjaro, Victoza, Trulicity and Byetta are approved for type 2 diabetes. When a clinician decides a compounded prescription is appropriate and you consent, it's filled through PerfectRx, which ships it to you; compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. JumpstartMD says its members lose 17% of body weight on average after nine months, a company figure. A search of the FDA warning-letter database under the JumpstartMD name returned no letters.

The evidence behind what JumpstartMD prescribes
We grade the molecules, not the marketing. Here is what the human data actually shows for each thing on their menu.
- Zepbound vs Wegovy: what the trials actually show
Zepbound (tirzepatide) leads on weight loss in the one head-to-head trial; Wegovy (semaglutide) has the cardiovascular-outcomes approval. An honest comparison.
- GLP-1 cost and insurance coverage: what drives the price, and what's actually covered
List price, net price, and your price are three different numbers. Indication drives coverage, savings cards have fine print, and cost is itself a clinical variable.
- Compounded vs branded GLP-1: regulatory status, sourcing and the evidence
Compounded GLP-1 isn't FDA-approved, the shortage exception behind it ended in 2025, the FDA moved against mass-marketed copies in 2026, and the trial data belong to the branded product. Here's the precise picture.
