Better U review

Video visits, two price routes

A ketamine-therapy practice that also prescribes branded or compounded GLP-1s after a video visit, from a $150 appointment, in 18 states.

Our verdict

Better U is a mental-health practice first, known for at-home ketamine therapy, and its weight-loss program is a side line. What it offers is a live video visit with a clinician and a choice of routes: a $150 appointment that can end with a branded GLP-1 prescription sent to your own pharmacy, or a compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide program advertised from $298 a month with the medication included. The trouble is that its two weight-loss pages describe these offers differently, and the compounded plan's details sit behind an assessment. It suits someone in one of its 18 states who wants a real conversation with a prescriber. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a clear, all-in monthly price up front.

What it is

Better U, Inc. provides management and technology services to affiliated medical practices, including Better U Clinical, P.A., Better U Clinical CA, ZF Medical New York, PC and Better Now Clinical NJ, PC, whose clinicians deliver the care. The company's main business is psychedelic-informed mental health: at-home ketamine therapy, holistic psychiatry, integration coaching and talk therapy. It also offers sexual health, longevity and weight-management programs. Its medical director is a psychiatrist, and the weight-loss pages quote a physician advisor with Johns Hopkins and Georgetown credentials. The weight-loss pages list 18 states where the program is available: Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. It displays a LegitScript seal.

How it works

You start with a two-minute online quiz to check eligibility, then book a virtual appointment with a licensed clinician, with same-day appointments advertised. The clinician reviews your history and records, decides whether a GLP-1 is appropriate, and builds a plan. On the branded route, the prescription goes to a pharmacy of your choice, and some offer same-day pickup. On the compounded route, medication compounded in what it calls FDA-inspected facilities is shipped to your door with supplies and free expedited shipping. Either way you get ongoing access to a support team and chat in a member portal, and the compounded program lists nutrition coaching and a review of metabolic labs among its benefits. Labs and bloodwork are not included in the price. Better U says it does not bill you automatically unless you choose a subscription; you can also buy one month at a time.

Pricing transparency

Better U's pricing depends on which page you read. Its semaglutide page and the package grid on its clinical weight-loss page sell a $150 clinical appointment, with the medication cost not included and the prescription sent to your pharmacy. Its online checkout also lists branded packages at $1,399 a month for Ozempic and $1,695 a month for Mounjaro. Lower on the clinical weight-loss page, a semaglutide and tirzepatide program is advertised "starting at $298 a month", and that page's FAQ says the consultation, prescribed medication and shipping are all included, with labs extra. Better U says the price stays the same as your dose rises. The term behind the $298 figure is not shown before the assessment, so ask whether it is a single month or part of a longer plan before paying. It does not accept insurance, and it offers third-party financing on its therapy packages. No refund policy specific to weight loss is published on the program pages.

Branded vs compounded

Clinicians can prescribe branded Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound or Mounjaro, compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, and other options such as metformin, acarbose, orlistat and naltrexone. Ozempic and Mounjaro are approved for type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss, while Wegovy and Zepbound carry the weight-management approval. Compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved and have not been reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality. The weight-loss percentages on its pages, such as up to 16.9% for Ozempic and 22.5% for Mounjaro, come from trials of branded drugs, and its GLP-1 calculator's estimate of 15% loss is a projection, not a promise. The safety information is long and includes the standard warnings about thyroid tumors, pancreatitis and low blood sugar.

Frequently asked

How much does Better U cost for weight loss?
A clinical appointment is $150, with medication billed separately at your pharmacy. Its checkout also lists branded packages at $1,399 a month for Ozempic and $1,695 for Mounjaro. A compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide program is advertised from $298 a month with the visit, medication and shipping included; labs are extra.
Does Better U prescribe compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide?
Yes. Alongside branded Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound, its clinicians can prescribe compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, which it ships to your door. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved.
Which states does Better U serve for weight loss?
Its weight-loss pages list 18 states: Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Is Better U a subscription?
Better U says it does not bill automatically unless you choose a subscription, and that you can buy one month at a time instead. For ongoing prescription orders it asks you to contact its support team.
Does Better U take insurance?
No. It charges out of pocket for visits and programs. If you take the branded route and fill the prescription at your own pharmacy, your drug coverage may apply to the medication itself.
Is Better U legit?
Better U, Inc. names the medical practices it supports, publishes its terms of service, and displays a LegitScript seal. The FDA's warning-letter database lists no letter under the Better U name or its website. The main thing to weigh is that its weight-loss pages disagree on what the price includes.
